Air Shipping Magnets: IATA Rules and Shielded Packaging
Magnets have their own aviation rulebook. The field thresholds, the packaging tricks that pass them, and the questions to ask any supplier.

Magnets are one of the few everyday products with their own aviation rulebook. Ship them wrong and the consequences range from returned cargo to real fines — and “we didn’t know” has never once worked as a defence. Why aviation cares about your magnets
Aircraft navigate partly by magnetic compass systems, and cargo sits close to them. A pallet of strong magnets radiating field is, from the airline’s perspective, an instrument-interference device. So magnetized material is classified as dangerous goods — Class 9, UN 3091… no — to be precise, UN 2807 “Magnetized material” under IATA rules, with a measurable threshold rather than a philosophical one.
The numbers that decide everything
- Fully regulated: field strength ≥ 0.418 A/m (0.00525 gauss) measured 2.1 m from any package surface → dangerous goods paperwork, marks, and carrier acceptance.
- Compliant / unregulated: below 0.418 A/m at 2.1 m → ships as general cargo. The gold standard adds: < 0.159 A/m (0.002 gauss) at 4.6 m, at which point many carriers waive even the “magnetized material” label.
Note what the rule measures: the package, not the magnet. A monster magnet in a well-engineered box can be unregulated; a keychain magnet in a paper envelope can fail.
How packaging tames the field
- Opposing orientation. Pack magnets in pairs and rows with fields opposing — most of the flux closes locally between neighbours.
- Steel shielding. Sheet-steel liners in the carton give stray flux a lazy path home before it ever reaches the box wall.
- Distance. Field falls off steeply; centring product in the box with padding converts centimetres into compliance.
Done together, these routinely bring even bulk NdFeB shipments under the unregulated threshold — we gauss-test packed cartons as a standard step and can supply the measurement record with each consignment.
What buyers should ask their supplier
- Do you test packages against IATA 953 field limits, and can you share readings?
- Which mode is planned — air, sea, rail? (Sea and rail are far more forgiving; heavy orders often route around the issue entirely.)
- Who handles DG paperwork if a shipment must fly regulated?

FAQ
Can small magnet orders go by regular courier?
Usually yes — small quantities packed with shielding pass the thresholds easily, and couriers accept them daily. The mistake is loose strong magnets in thin packaging.
Are sea shipments regulated the same way?
Sea (IMDG) treats magnetized material far more leniently; the strict thresholds above are aviation-specific. Bulk magnet trade moves overwhelmingly by sea for cost anyway.
Do shielded boxes weaken the magnets inside?
No. Shielding redirects the external field path; it does nothing to the magnets’ internal magnetization. Unbox and they are exactly as shipped.
